Seeing first-hand the devastation in New Orleans, we were inspired to design a modular space for disaster relief. The intent is for this design to work for the people who need it most, by creating community spaces that make a lasting difference.
We focused on two intrinsic human elements necessary to lead fulfilling lives: community and social interaction. Despite being such a vital part of disaster relief efforts, no Federal or private organizations have fully explored this concept in either the response or recovery phases of disaster management.
(project) PL -- "place" abbreviated is "PL" -- does this by modifying shipping containers for use as public parks, market places, squares, etc. In conjunction with relief efforts, our desire is for ownership by local communited to drive these spaces. This is why we're called (project) PL: "Project" is intended to be substituted with the location - e.g. (New Orleans)PL. We are dedicated to designing this environmentally sustainable electronic system for community spaces, because we live in an exciting new world where "Green Design" isn't simply a buzz-word for the future - it's the new standard for all design.
We understand that this is only one part of recovery after a disaster, but we believe that our solution to provide public spaces for education
and communication adds to the necessary dialogue to find the proper solution.
